iPad Apps for Starters

Just got a new iPad and wondering where to start?  Here's TekkieBob's quick list:


Of course, much depends on personal usage, but many apps that are must-haves are free.  I'll do it by category:

Productivity:
Must haves:
  • Evernote
  • DropBox
  • iWork
    • Pages - for creating good docs that can be converted to Word and PDF
    • Numbers - the best spreadsheet app. Ever.
    • Keynote - blows away PowerPoint and works great with external displays
  • GoodReader - PDF annotation and password protected
  • ZipBrowser - to open and manage ziped files sent in emails
Good to have:
  • DukePen - note taking and handwriting
  • Skitch
  • Gmail app
  • Box - box.com
  • BE Write HD - blog posting, etc.
Photography/Video: (Remember, the iPad camera is not the greatest)
Must haves:
  • Photogene2
  • Color Effects
  • Snap Seed - Yep, is very good!  Saw that Starbucks is featuring it this week as a give-away.  Go. Get. It.
Good to have:
  • PS Express
  • TimeLapse
  • Shutterfly - unlimited photo storage
  • iMovie
News / Web:
  • *NEW* Chrome for iOS - Top of the list!!
  • River of news - works with Google Reader
  • Flipboard
  • Terra - alternative browser
  • Chromy - alternative browser
Games / Entertainment:
  • Netflix - if you have an account, it works great with iPad
  • Air Video - stream from your computer
  • Pandora
  • Osmos HD - puzzle game (physics)

Often it is useful to show a person's age or years elapsed since a start date.  For example: Hire Date: 4/1/2012 - Years of service: 1.5 Here's a formula for Numbers that will do the trick: =IF(ISBLANK(cellReference),"",DATEDIF( cellReference ,TODAY(),"D")/365.2425) Replace the cellReference with the actual cell reference. i.e.: (A1)  So here's the breakdown: =IF(ISBLANK(cellReference),""  --- this checks to see if there is a start date in your referenced cell.  For example say your spreadsheet has a cell (A1) that holds a date of birth, but it is not yet referenced, this will result in an empty string. (Blank cell) Otherwise, it calculates the years:  DATEDIF( cellReference ,TODAY(),"D")/365.2425) DATEDIF compares two dates.
